Art Nouveau 08 by ssava Art Nouveau 08 by ssava
For my eighth Art Nouveau painting... I worked a bit larger.
I went from the 11x15 inch Strathmore paper to a 12x18 Canson paper.

I have to say, the paper didn't hold the color as well. It felt like I was fighting it a bit more. I don't know.

I think I'd like to try that expensive Arches paper I always see (but pass on because it's too much).

Either way. I'm happy with the painting. I've never painted roses before. So it was fun to learn.

Hope you enjoy it!

I so love Alphonse Mucha's style, and I had to think of it immediately when I saw this painting. Lovely work!

Thank you! I've still got quite a long way to go in learning to be better at this style.

I really had to look at this a moment, was thinking the shadows where a post production thing "Photo-shopped". At a closer gander, I could see it was a natural looking water color stroke of grey. really nice and clean =)

at the next comic convention you go to, just hit up the art supply dealer... ask them if they have any sample packs. They practically shove them down my throat (as bag stuffing) all i bought was a 3$ Copic <0.0> ended up with 14.5x11 bristle board right down to the little trading card art thingys... one of each.. i think it was Canson one time around... something else on another occasion. They often sell single sheets too, so that's a good way to sample. =)

Thank you. Great advice!
Yes. The shadow was a last minute experiment done with a copic marker actually.
Not sure if it's something I'll continue to do in future pieces.

The choice was good one with the marker, it might not work with every piece. But it worked well with this one and added a really nice depth to it =)

It makes me so happy that you're doing Mucha-inspired work. I already enjoy your work, but Alphonse Mucha is my favorite artist, so I'm tickled that you're making these.

Thank you. I've been enjoying learning the style.
He's so fantastic, though...I constantly feel I'll never be good enough.

Yeah, I get that. It's hard to compare your work to those of one of the masters. Still you have a lot of it down, I mean I see a lot of people try the style but it all looks so flat. Yours looks like it actually has depth and that little bit of soft chubbiness he had when he painted flesh.
